DepEd prioritizes in-person learning in new school calendar

The Department of Education (DepEd) on July 16 announced the official school calendar and activity guidelines for the school year 2024-2025.

The plan prioritizes in-person learning “given its crucial role in enabling in-depth and real-time teacher and learner interaction,” the Department Order 009 series of 2024 said.

Classes for the upcoming school year will formally open July 29 and conclude April 15, 2025.

This schedule incorporates the mid-year break from November 25 to 29 and the Christmas break starting December 21, with classes resuming on January 2, 2025.

While in-person learning is the primary mode of instruction, DepEd acknowledges the need for flexibility. Schools can implement blended learning or full distance learning approaches under specific circumstances, adhering to Department Order 44 series of 2022.

This caters to situations where in-person classes might be disrupted due to unforeseen events.

The enrollment period kicks off on July 3 and runs until July 26.

Opening prep

To gear up for the new school year, Brigada Eskwela, a nationwide school cleaning and repair drive, will be held from July 22 to 27 under the theme “Bayanihan Para sa Matatag na Paaralan” (Community Effort for a Strong School).

The department will also conduct its annual Oplan Balik Eskwela (School Supplies Assistance Program) from July 22 to August 2.

The department order mandates regular formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress.

Additionally, career guidance activities will be integrated within the first and second quarters to assist students in planning their academic paths.

Awarding ceremonies to recognize student achievements are slated to happen no later than three days before the official end-of-school-year rites scheduled for April 14-15, 2025.

Flexibility for private schools

The guidelines serve as a framework, and private schools, along with state universities and colleges (SUCs/LUCs), are encouraged to adopt them.

However, they must comply with the mandated number of class days stipulated in Republic Act 11480 and adhere to the department’s guidelines regarding the opening of the school year.

Any unavoidable deviations from these guidelines must be reported beforehand to their respective regional offices.
