The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has approved “in principle” the operation of Colegio de La Castellana to be run by the Municipality of La Castellana in Negros Occidental.

The CHED’s provisional endorsement allows the new college to start offering classes in the upcoming academic year 2024-2025.

The local college will begin entrance exams on July 5 and 6 for its initial academic programs, which include a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems (BSIS), a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (BECEd), and a Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship (BSEntrep).

Councilor Patrick Estoya, who chairs the Municipal Council’s education committee, said the BSIS program has already received formal approval, while the BECEd and BSEntrep programs are awaiting final confirmation from CHED.

This approval is a major step forward, Estoya said. He added that it reflects CHED’s confidence in the municipality’s plans and the college’s potential to benefit the community.

The college is located on Rizal Street in Barangay Robles and aims to offer affordable and accessible higher education to local residents.

Mayor Alme Rhummyla Nicor-Mangilimutan, who is a licensed professional teacher, expressed her commitment to educational advancement.

“Colegio de La Castellana will produce an empowered professional in every family,” she said.

The CHED’s provisional approval means the college must meet additional requirements for full accreditation. The local administration is committed to meeting these standards and ensuring the college’s long-term success.

This development provides a significant opportunity for local students and those from nearby areas to pursue higher education without having to travel far from home.
