QC expands financial support to student scholars

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte has announced a major expansion of the city’s scholarship program, raising annual stipends for senior high school, tertiary and vocational course scholars.

This increase aims to provide greater financial support for students and encourage educational pursuits among local youth.

Since taking office in 2019, Belmonte’s administration has supported over 31,120 scholars.

The new ordinance (SP-3283, S-2024), which was recently approved, also increases college (tertiary) scholarships from P4,000 to P25,000 for students in academics, athletics, arts, and youth leadership.

Additionally, stipends for continuing education and vocational course scholars will rise from P6,000 to P10,000.

The expanded scholarship program now includes new categories for senior high school students, allowing selection based on academics, specialized tracks, athletics, arts, and youth leadership.

This change aims to provide diverse opportunities that cater to different student interests and talents.

“Hangad natin na mas paigtingin ang mga programa ng lungsod na may pangmatagalang epekto sa buhay ng ating kabataan. Handog ng pagpapalawak ng kasalukuyang scholarship program ang iba-ibang oportunidad para sa libo-libong QCitizens na nagnanais makapag-aral o magbalik-eskwela. [We aim to strengthen the city’s programs that have a long-term impact on the lives of our youth. The expansion of the current scholarship program offers various opportunities for thousands of QCitizens who wish to study or return to school],” Belmonte said.

She added, “Providing more funds to our scholarship program is a necessary and sound investment for the city’s future.”

In addition to the increased stipends, the city will launch the QC Excel Scholarship for tertiary students.

The program targets students who excel academically and show leadership through volunteer work and community involvement.

The city government hopes to cultivate a new generation of leaders who will support local initiatives.

Belmonte urged aspiring scholars to secure their QCitizen ID, which is required to access social services, including the scholarship program.
