Vice President and outgoing Education Secretary Sara Duterte urged aspiring journalists to always report the truth and avoid spreading false information as she addressed students during the opening ceremonies of the National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) in Carcar City, Cebu.

“Never print or post or circulate something that you know is not the truth,” Duterte said. “Do not destroy other people’s lives or the image of various organizations with false information.”

Duterte emphasized the importance of not mixing opinions with assumptions in journalism.

“If what you write is your opinion, never assume anything. Do not mix assumption and opinion, those are different things,” she added.

The NSPC is an annual event that promotes fair and ethical use of media, aiming to recognize the role of journalism in advocating for social consciousness and environmental awareness. This year’s conference runs from July 8 to July 12.

Duterte’s speech highlighted the ethical responsibilities of journalists, a critical issue amid the growing concerns over misinformation.

She reminded participants of the long-lasting impact their work could have on individuals and organizations. “Never assume anything, and don’t lie in your work,” Duterte said, reinforcing the need for accuracy and integrity in journalism.

The conference also aims to demonstrate to participants the understanding of journalism through skillful execution in various platforms such as print, broadcast, and online.

It seeks to inspire students to pursue journalism careers and win not just local but international awards.

This event marks one of Duterte’s last duties as education secretary, as she resigned from her post on June 19, effective July 19. Senator Sonny Angara is set to replace her.

The NSPC, held pursuant to Republic Act 7079, brings together campus journalists from across the country to compete and showcase their skills.

It underscores the importance of responsible journalism and ethical media practices.

Duterte expressed hope for the future of these young journalists, encouraging them to adhere to high standards in their reporting. “Never print or post or circulate something that you know is not the truth,” she concluded.
