The family of a student who committed suicide after receiving low grades will meet today, June 18, with the teacher involved. This meeting comes amid questions over delayed administrative actions and the lack of formal affidavits from both parties.
The student, referred to by the alias Nonoy, was a 15-year-old from Maasin, Iloilo. He took his own life on May 10 after leaving a note saying he could not handle the schoolwork assigned by his teacher, identified only as Ma’am Laura.
Nonoy received grades of 64, 69, and 66 in a home economics class, which his family believes led to his despair.
The Iloilo Schools Division has recommended administrative action against the teacher and referred the case to the Department of Education (DepEd) Region 6.
However, as of this writing, no affidavits have been submitted by either Nonoy’s family or the teacher, as confirmed by Iloilo Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Ernesto Servillon. This has delayed the filing of a formal administrative case.
Today’s meeting, as reported by XFM Radyo Patrol Iloilo, aims to address the concerns of Nonoy’s family and hear the teacher’s side of the story. Dr. Servillon noted this discussion is crucial for a fair investigation and may offer a chance for reconciliation.
Nonoy’s family has expressed frustration over the lack of communication and support from school authorities. They only learned about the administrative requirements on June 13, more than a month after Nonoy’s death, when they visited Dr. Servillon’s office.
Dr. Servillon clarified that the Schools Division had conducted an investigation and submitted their findings to DepEd Region 6 on May 31. He stated that the report included recommendations for further action but did not elaborate on the contents.
Meanwhile, there are unconfirmed reports about possibly transferring Ma’am Laura to another school or allowing her to work from home. Dr. Servillon stated they are assessing whether she can remain productive in her current role.
As of this writing, no official statement has been released regarding the outcome of the meeting between Nonoy’s family and Ma’am Laura. The hope is that today’s meeting will bring clarity and a path forward for all parties.
