President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has signed Executive Order No. 70 transferring the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) from the Department of Education (DepEd) to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
“To maximize the full potential of the Philippine film industry, it is imperative to ensure that world-class Filipino talents in the field of motion picture arts and sciences are given due recognition and assistance by the national government,” Marcos said.
The executive order seeks to enhance support for local filmmakers and artists.
The FAP, originally created in 1981, will now operate under DTI’s supervision.
The new order reorganizes the FAP and establishes a Board of Trustees made up of officials from various government agencies. Its main function will be to recognize outstanding films and artists while promoting the growth of the film sector.
In line with existing laws (Republic Act Nos. 11904 and 9167), the FAP will partner with DepEd, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, Film Development Council of the Philippines, private sector, academe and other relevant bodies to provide programs, training and support for the welfare and professional development of workers in the country’s film industry.
This collaboration aims to provide training and support for film workers in the industry.
Funding for these initiatives will come from current appropriations of FAP’s member agencies.
The order encourages collaboration with agencies like the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and the Cultural Center of the Philippines to enhance these efforts.
The FAP, under the new administration, will also launch an annual National Film Awards to celebrate Filipino talent in motion picture arts.
The Department of Budget and Management will identify additional funding sources to ensure successful implementation, the order stated.
