The Department of Education (DepEd) has authorized schools in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon) and Metro Manila affected by volcanic smog, or vog, from Taal Volcano to suspend in-person classes without waiting for local government announcements.
The DepEd issued the directive on Aug. 19 following Taal Volcano’s release of vog over the past 24 hours. The agency aims to safeguard students and staff from potential health risks associated with the vog.
“In light of the recent eruption of Taal Volcano and the release of vog in the past 24 hours, the Department of Education is authorizing affected schools to suspend classes in the absence of an official announcement from the local government units,” the DepEd said in a statement.
The decision to suspend classes will depend on “whether it is safe for learners and teachers to return” to the schools, according to the DepEd.
To ensure learning continuity in affected areas, the DepEd has instructed schools to employ alternative delivery modalities such as modular or online learning.
Education Secretary Juan Edgardo Angara issued DepEd Memorandum No. 46 authorizing affected schools to suspend classes in the absence of an official announcement from the local government units.
The Department of Health (DOH) has also urged the public to avoid exposure to harmful vog and smog by limiting outdoor activities, keeping doors and windows closed in houses or establishments, and staying hydrated by drinking water.
