Here’s how some mommy teachers will be spending Mother’s Day

For Rowena Ortiz, a full-time teacher at the De La Salle College Antipolo and a mom of three, Mother’s Day is one of the events she looks forward to celebrating. And like many, she does so very simply.

“My family celebrates Mother’s Day at home, my husband cooks for us, a simple dinner together with my family, and of course flowers and a cake will not be missed,” Ortiz said, saying that it’s the simple gestures from her family that makes her feel loved and appreciated.

Since Mother’s Day lands on the second Sunday of May, Maria Edisa Oltiveros, teacher at the Kumintang Elementary School in Batangas, will start the celebration with a family mass followed by simple festivities with good food and family.

“We will go to my mother’s house with my kids for a simple celebration, kaunting salo-salo. For dinner, we will have a family date with my husband after work,” she said.

Jamaica Tampucao, teacher at the Buhaynasapa Integrated National High School in San Juan, Batangas, will also visit the healing church of the Kamay ni Hesus in Lucban, Quezon.

“We’ll enjoy nature and give thanks for our blessings, especially our youngest’s recovery,” Tampucao said, explaining her youngest recently suffered for seven days from viral diarrhea.

A mass is also in order in the schedule of Myra Garcia, a special science teacher at the Recto Memorial National High School in Tiaong, Quezon, followed by lunch at a restaurant plus other surprises.

“To make the day sweeter, my hubby books a spa treat, making me feel like all my stress will be washed out. Truly, it’s a pampering day, making me feel I am the “queen” of the house,” she said.

While some mother teachers follow a certain plan, the perfect celebration for Mawen Ricohermoso-Sanchez, a senior lecturer at the University of the Philippines – Diliman, is having no particular plan at all.

“I would love to have a slow day with my child and husband, whether that’s just kulitan around the house or hanging around somewhere. Slow day is a great mothers’ day gift. But we will definitely cap the day off with a good meal and great laughs,” Ricohermoso-Sanchez added.

Whatever mother teachers do to make the most of their special day, the celebration is almost made complete by just reminiscing their precious memories with their children.

“Being a mother to my daughter is an accomplishment. [I am thankful] for the wonderful moments,” Concepcion Integrated School – Secondary Level Teacher Perlita Radam said.
