Students from the Tel-Aviv-based Ron Vardi School for Gifted and Outstanding Students have launched a project to convert old Philippine jeepneys into eco-friendly mobile learning centers.

The initiative, which combines Israeli technology with sustainability practices, was presented at the Philippine Embassy in Tel Aviv on May 20.

Philippine Ambassador to Israel Pedro Laylo Jr. welcomed the students and their mentors, who showcased their innovative project aimed at helping low-income communities in the Philippines.

The repurposed jeepneys will feature solar-powered water disinfection systems, rainwater collection systems, and herb gardens planted in recycled plastic bottles.

“They will also have teaching modules on a green and sustainable environment, such as recycling plastic bags into bricks for construction, earth-friendly food packaging, community composting, and the use of seed bombs to plant vegetables and herbs,” the embassy said in a statement.

During the presentation, the students gifted Ambassador Laylo with a model of their jeepney project. In return, Laylo gave them souvenirs featuring jeepneys and Philippine tourism destinations.

He expressed his gratitude, saying, “Thank you very much for choosing the Philippines as your project site and I congratulate you for your innovative proposal.”

The ambassador added that he would endorse the project to Quezon City for collaboration and implementation. Quezon City is the sister city of Rishon LeZion, where the Ron Vardi School is located.

The students were accompanied by their teacher-mentor Ronit Mashiach, student counselor Liza Benjo, and Danit Oleiash from the Israeli Ministry of Education. Their project aims to bring educational resources and sustainable practices to underserved areas in the Philippines.

The embassy highlighted the significance of this collaboration, noting that it strengthens the bond between Israel and the Philippines while promoting environmental sustainability and education.

The Ron Vardi School students’ project exemplifies how innovative thinking and international cooperation can address real-world issues.

By transforming old jeepneys into mobile learning hubs, they aim to make a positive impact on both the environment and education in the Philippines.
