Laoag City in Ilocos Norte welcomed a new addition to its education system with the inauguration of the Rodolfo CG Fariñas Jr. National Science High School (RCGFNSHS) on Wednesday.

Named after former Ilocos Norte first district congressman Rodolfo C. Fariñas, the school admitted its inaugural class of 80 Grade 7 students, marking a significant milestone under Republic Act 10965, signed into law on December 28, 2017.

Flenie A. Galicinao, education program supervisor for the Department of Education in Laoag City and future officer-in-charge of RCGFNSHS, detailed the selection process, explaining that out of 135 qualified applicants, only the top 80 were chosen based on a rigorous written exam and interview criteria.

Set to commence classes in July, the school will operate with five teachers overseeing two sections of 40 students each, focusing on delivering a rigorous science-oriented curriculum aimed at preparing students for advanced studies and careers in science and technology.

According to Joann Corpuz, superintendent of the Laoag City Schools Division, the establishment of RCGFNSHS required meticulous planning and preparation, including the formulation of regulations, construction of facilities, curriculum design, classroom setup, and procurement of educational resources.

The school’s budget for the first year totals PHP 2.9 million, covering operational costs such as teacher salaries and learning materials. This investment underscores Laoag City’s commitment to enhancing educational opportunities and fostering future leaders in the sciences.

Aligned with the city’s 59th Charter Day celebration, the opening of RCGFNSHS signifies a significant step towards advancing educational standards in Laoag City, promising a foundation for academic excellence and innovation in science education for generations to come.
