State universities and colleges (SUCs) in the Soccsksargen region have firmed up their support in implementing a new research agenda aimed at tackling regional challenges and boosting innovation.

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) have entered into a memorandum of understanding with the universities to ensure the success of the Soccsksargen Regional Development and Innovation Research Agenda (RDIRA) 2023–2028.

NEDA Assistant Regional Director Romel Patrick Tanghal said the research agenda will guide policymakers in making decisions based on solid evidence, with the proposed studies on the agenda to aid in achieving the goal.

Tanghal said the collaborative initiative is vital for creating a “prosperous, inclusive, and resilient Soccsksargen.”

Christine Dawn Obemio, research director at Mindanao State University in General Santos City, stressed the importance of a supportive environment for faculty and student researchers.

“We want to equip them and provide them with specialized training and courses that will strengthen their capacity to do research that is focused on areas strategic to the needs of the region,” she said during the recent agreement signing.

John Thomas Franco, executive vice president of St. Alexius College, highlighted the need for platforms to present research findings.

He said providing venues for forums and conferences would not only be able to witness the significance of their studies, but would allow participants to share their work and boost their morale.

Sammy Malawan, regional director of DOST in Soccsksargen, emphasized the role of academic institutions in creating opportunities and solutions through research.

“Our state universities and HEIs play a significant role in ‘opening opportunities’ and ‘providing solutions,’” he said.

Malawan also leads the Regional Research, Development, and Innovation Committee, the Soccsksargen Industry, Energy, Emerging Technology Research and Development Consortium and the Health Research and Development Consortium.
