Cavite State University (CvSU) Bacoor City Campus and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) have teamed up to launch a new tutoring program aimed at supporting students affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The “Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program” (TBTP), formalized on June 3, seeks to provide educational assistance to young learners and offer financial support to college students from low-income families.

The partnership, established in a signing ceremony with DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian, Bacoor City Mayor Strike Revilla and CvSU Vice President for Academic Affairs Ma. Agnes Nuestro, aims to address the learning gaps that have widened due to the pandemic. 

“This program is the Department’s contribution to strengthening social protection programs for the vulnerable sectors, especially Filipino children and the youth,” said Gatchalian during the event.

Under the TBTP, college students will serve as tutors for struggling grade school students, particularly those who are non-readers or have been significantly impacted by the disruptions caused by the pandemic. 

These tutors, who come from low-income families themselves, will receive a daily stipend of P570 for their work over a 20-day period. 

The program aims to alleviate financial burdens on these students while empowering them to contribute to their communities.

Gatchalian said DSWD aims to engage college students from low-income families in nation-building through TBTP, while supporting their completion of tertiary education. 

The initiative not only provides an immediate benefit to young learners but also creates a meaningful opportunity for college students to gain work experience and financial aid.

The program, supported by the local government and the Department of Education in Bacoor City, highlights the collaborative efforts of various institutions to support education and social welfare in the community. 

Bacoor City government recently reported that 234 3rd to 4th year college students from CvSU have participated actively in this year’s program. These college students will tutor Grade 1 students transitioning to Grade 2 in DEPED, focusing on enhancing reading skills for those in need. 

TBTP is set to run from July 1 to 26 in all public elementary schools across Bacoor.
