The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) recently trained teachers in the Rizal province to run student-friendly campaigns on volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis.

The initiative equips teachers with the skills to design age-appropriate educational materials which could provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to stay safe in the event of an emergency.

“The training serves as an avenue to assist DepEd DRR [Department of Education Disaster Risk Reduction] focal persons to effectively design and develop awareness-raising tools suitable for their students’ learning needs,” said DOST-PHIVOLCS in a statement.

The June 25 session covered hazard identification and disaster response protocols.

Participants also received in-depth information on volcanic eruptions, delivered by PHIVOLCS Deputy Director Dr. Mylene M. Villegas. Her presentations covered volcanic hazards and impacts, along with crucial steps to take before, during and after an eruption.

The Philippines, located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, is particularly vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
