Storms hit 3,900 classrooms; DepEd releases P17M for emergency aid

The Department of Education (DepEd) has reported widespread damage to schools nationwide due to recent calamities, with a total of 3,950 classrooms either partially or completely damaged.

According to DepEd’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (DRRMS), 2,492 classrooms sustained minor damage, 726 suffered major damage and 732 were totally destroyed by the combined effects of Typhoons Dante and Emong and the southwest monsoon. Additionally, 327 Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities were affected.

In response, DepEd initiated the release of over P17 million to support schools in affected areas. Of the total amount, P6.98 million has been allocated for immediate cleaning and clearing operations, while P10.04 million will go toward minor classroom repairs.

DepEd has also instructed its regional and division field offices to activate contingency plans, safeguard essential school equipment and records and maintain close coordination with local disaster response units.

DepEd said it is closely tracking developments on the ground and taking steps to safeguard students’ well-being and ensure that learning continues, even in times of crisis.

Meanwhile, teachers and personnel in affected areas may avail of DepEd’s Provident Fund loans and GSIS Calamity Loans, as well as apply for a 30-day Calamity Leave. Personnel impacted by disaster-related injuries or fatalities may also claim benefits under the GSIS-issued Group Personal Accident Insurance (GPAI).
